The Backpacking Honor Society

TROOP 217 emphasizes Backpacking.   All of our scouts are strongly encouraged to be comfortable in and appreciative of the great outdoors.   Years ago, a former scout expressed an interest in establishing an award that would emphasize skills necessary for a scout to enjoy and be able to survive in the great outdoors.   The Benchmark Award is being established to recognize troop members who have earned all 5 of the merit badges listed below.   Troop members who complete the requirements will be enshrined as members of the Backpacking Honor Society.    Currently, a Scout must earn each of the following merit badges: Camping,  Cooking,  Wilderness Survival,  Backpacking and First-Aid. Also, a Scout must be able to explain or demonstrate to a leader the following:  Orienting a map, Declination,  Map Symbols,  Finding direction via the sun, and Finding direction under the stars. Additionally, a Scout must successfully earn the "Leave No Trace Award".    Finally, a Scout must earn the 50 Miler Award, or participate in a Troop authorized backpacking high adventure trek covering 50 miles and at least 5 days and nights under a canvas, or earn the 100 nights of Camping Award.   Upon completing these requirements, the Scout is presented with his very own 217 Backpacking Honor Society Buckle (pictured above).

The following troop members have earned their way into The Benchmark Society.  They are:
